“Feels like I’m wasting my life at work and my career is dying. Help!"

“It feels like I’m wasting my life there and my career is dying. What should I do?”

That is something I hear all the time, and the simple answer to that is you need to change. Ok, how?

Firstly, you’ve got to get clear on when you say something like, “I’m wasting my life there.”

Why is that? Why do you feel you’re wasting your life there? What is it about the job that you don’t like? Or what is it that you feel you would rather be doing?

Until you get clear on why you feel it’s a waste and why you feel your career is dying there, not improving, then you won’t be able to change. To be even more precise, you won’t even know what to change.

Something that might help you, is to remember why you joined your current work / job / role in the first place.

You took that job for a reason. There must have been at least one reason you liked it or why you wanted that particular job. Try to remember what it was.

And if that reason is no longer true, or it won’t be coming back, then you have to move on. You will have to ask yourself and find out “What is not a waste of my life?”.

What would you rather be doing, that you feel will not be killing your career or a waste of your time?

Get clear on what you want to do and then work towards it.

It’s all too easy to just say it’s the job’s fault, it’s someone else’s fault, the boss’s fault. Or, I don’t like the work, I don’t like my teammates. I don’t like what I’m doing, it’s wasting my time. But I need to do it.

Well, that’s how it is, believe it. And those situations are not going to change unless you change, or you change the situation.

You very simply have a choice. You either keep doing what you do and don’t complain, or you change and make the situation, your life better for yourself.

Again, how?

You’ve got to get clear again on what you want to do. Get clear on how to improve your life. Decide what’s not going to be a waste of your time and then go for it. Even if it means out of work hours. You should go and do it while keeping your day job.

And so, if you feel like you’re “wasting your life there and your career is dying”, figure out what is not a waste of your life. Go towards it! Try to improve and get there.

In the meantime, to make the current situation feel a little bit better, try to remember why you took this job in the first place, or even be grateful for the basic fact that it pays you, whilst you figure out the above.

That would be my simple answer to “I feel like I’m wasting my life at work.”
